Final decision on bus fare hike next month: Minister

Wednesday, July 27, 2011: State Transport Minister VS Sivakumar today informed that a final decision on hiking the minimum bus charge will be taken on August 5. The decision was taken at the meeting held between VS Sivakumar and the bus operators, here on Wednesday.
The next cabinet meet would take the final decision and the decision would come into effect within August 5. The bus owners also demanded to hike the concession charge to student travelers. Minister said a decision on the same would be taken after having a discussion with the representatives of student organizations on Friday.

The Cabinet on Tuesday has decided to hike the bus fares in the state. The cabinet approved the suggestions submitted by the expert committee appointed by the government to study the bus fare issue.
With the decision the minimum fare of the ordinary buses will go up to Rs 5. For the fast passenger buses will go up to Rs 7.
According to the fares approved by the cabinet the minimum distance that can be travelled for minimum fare will be increased from 2.5 kilometers to five kilometers.
