Trawling ban in Kerala to end today

Sunday, July 31, 2011: This year’s annual 47-day-ban on trawling which came to effect from July 15 will end by Sunday midnight. The ban was imposed within 12 nautical miles (22.22 km) from the shoreline till July 31.
The ban aims at conserving fish species during the monsoon, which is the spawning season for many varieties of fish, including shrimp. During the ban period all those working in mechanized boats, peeling sheds and fishing harbours in the state are provided with free ration.
