Thursday, July 14, 2011: Opposition members in Kerala today staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest against the government’’s ”inaction” on alleged collection of capitation fees by a medical college at nearby Karakonam. Seeking to take up the issue through an Adjournment Motion, V S Sunil Kumar (CPI) alleged that the government allowed Self-Financing Professional Private Managements to collect high tuition fees and also capitation fees.
Quoting reports, he said Dr Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College had collected between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh as capitation fees for admission to MBBS courses.
He also demanded that the government should conduct a probe into it and take urgent steps to rein in private managements.

Replying to the notice, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy assured the House that stringent action would be taken against managements that receive capitation fees.

Health Minister Adoor Prakash said government would order a probe if it receives complaint in writing on the allegations. Government has so far not received any complaint and ”media report in this regard has come to the notice of government”, he said.
Speaker G Karthikeyan disallowed leave for the motion after replies of Chief Minister and Health Minister following which Opposition members led by V S Achuthanandan walked out.
Achuthanandan supported the opposition’s demand that the government find a permanent solution to the admission and fees tangle in Self Financing Professional Colleges.
However, he said Opposition was not satisfied with the government’s stand towards the Medical College Management which allegedly took capitation fees.
