KPCC executive may discuss Vakkom panel report

KOCHI: It is a wait and watch situation for the Congress with the Vakkom Purushothaman panel, set up by the KPCC to probe into the poor performance of the party in the last Assembly elections, coming down on  factionalism, infighting and senior leaders vying with each other in the selection of candidates.
Though most of the senior and youth leaders are of the opinion that disciplinary action should be taken against those Congress men who had indulged in anti-party activities, most of the partymen are apprehensive on if any action would be taken.

The report submitted to the party will likely be discussed in the KPCC executive meeting after which the course of the action would be decided, Purushothaman told Express.
Sources noted that even if the senior leaders were indicted for anti-party activities, it is unlikely for them to face any action. It has to be noted that similar committees had been appointed in the past when the Congress faced much factionalism, but no action was taken on such reports.
The Congressmen fear that the Vakkom report would also have the similar fate of other reports.  Moreover, it is not likely that any action would be taken with the United Democratic Front having a slender majority in the Assembly. However, they indicated an increase of factionalism in the coming days once the report comes up in party executive meeting.
The panel, which also had A C Jose and V S Vijayaraghavan as members, had visited all the 14 districts and held sittings. Among the reasons for the poor show of the party, the panel finds factionalism and infighting as the main reason for the party’s poor performance in many seats. It is learnt that the panel also has included several senior party leaders in the list of those who have indulged in factionalism.
