Thursday, August 04, 2011: Opposition Leader VS Achuthanandan today criticized the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR)’s study report on the endosulfan issue that there was no need for a nation wide ban on the harmful pesticide.
Speaking to the reporters here on Thursday, VS added that the report was suicidal and the Centre must strongly object the report in the Court. The CPM will stage an agitation against the report, he added.
The report also says that since an alternative pesticide for endosulfan is costly, the ban can be implemented only in Kerala and Karnataka.
The ICMR study conducted in Kasargod revolved around 489 endosulfan affected victims. Out of this only 15 people were found with maximun residue limit of endosulfan.
Health hazards were reported only in areas where aerial spraying of endosulfan was undertaken. The ICMR study detected liver and kidney-related diseases. As no health-related problems were reported in other parts of the country, a national ban is not advisable, said the ICMR report.
ICMR Director General Viswamohan Katoj had disclosed the other day that modern scientific approach is needed for the rehabilitation of endosulfan affected victims.

Most of the comments seem to be on the politicians and counter arguments against the ban. Before raising the flag for any side think about your food and our health. Any thing that happens in the farming will reach our body. Farming practices should not be seen isolated from our food issues. So it is better to see the issue “whether theses chemicals are needed for our and our children's body or not?” Don't get boggled down with the argument of food scarcity and hunger. None of us are going to change our life style or reduce our consumption to eradicate the poverty or hunger either at globsl level or at local level. They are the worries of the system managers - the govt. and certainly not of yours. Let us try to focus on our self. Do we need these kinds of chemicals in our food stuffs?
