One cannot be arrested if name mentioned in FIR, says Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Arresting a person if his name is mentioned in the FIR is not the approach of the government, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He said this while replying to opposition’s demand to arrest P K Basheer MLA.

Addressing a press meet, Chandy said that if a person has to be arrested after his name is mentioned in the FIR, then the first person to be arrested is K K Jayachandran MLA in the Ancheri Baby murder case.

The opposition is disrupting the assembly proceedings in order to cover something. The government is not protecting Basheer as a ruling MLA. The statement against Basheer in the FIR is weak. The opposition is trying to create a controversy on the speeches of Basheer.

Chandy said usually during question hour, the opposition leader is not given a chance to speak. I had also held the post of opposition leader for five years. When the opposition leader was given a chance later, he did not utilize it.

Minister P K Kunhalikutty, who attended the press meet said it was a not a political murder which happened in Areekode but was a family fight. The Muslim League will take strong action if Basheer is found guilty.
