Vehicle-checking: Bus drivers warn government

The Mini Bus Drivers’ Welfare Association has warned that it would halt all  operations, including school services, if the police continue with arbitrary vehicle inspections.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday in the wake of Tuesday’s accident that occurred near Pothencode in which 29 passengers were injured, association president A Nazeer

said that the move of Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials to chase a crowded vehicle was an inhuman act. He demanded that the officials should be charged under Section 307 of the IPC and terminated from service.

“We had spoken to the District Collector two weeks ago regarding the measures to be taken during this academic year. He told us to continue with last year’s arrangements and added that he himself would inform this to the media. So, the association did not bother to issue any guidelines to the member drivers,” Nazeer said.

He also alleged that the Collector failed to inform the decision to the media and the gazette issued by the Government was full of mistakes.

During the last academic year, not a single vehicle registered with the association met with any accident or ended up in any case. So, smooth and safe operation can be ensured if the government decides to convene a meeting of all the parties concerned, Nazeer said.

Meanwhile, those injured in  Tuesday’s accident are recuperating in the Medical College Hospital. Of the 29 injured, six were children and were admitted to the SAT Hospital.
