Presence of Nipah suspected on patient, no need to panic, says K K Shylaja

KOCHI: The presence of Nipah virus is suspected on the student undergoing treatment for severe fever at a private hospital in Kochi, said Health Minister K K Shylaja. However, it can be confirmed only after more tests. Test results of a private lab has raised suspicion of the virus. It can be confirmed only after getting the results from Virology Institutes of Pune and Alappuzha. The minister said there was no need to panic and the health department will deal it strongly. The minister directed to be vigilant and asked that if anybody has high fever and cough should not hide it.

The presence of the virus has been suspected on the student studying at an educational firm in Thodupuzha, Idukki. He had reached Thrissur with the fever. The officials of the health department have been directed to observe the suspects who came close with the patient. All precautionary measures have been taken to prevent Nipah. A high level meet of the health department will be convened in Kochi today. An isolation ward has been set up at Kalamassery Medical College in Ernakulam. Apart from that, all arrangements have been made in all the main hospitals of the state. If the presence of Nipah virus is confirmed, antibiotic brought from Australia is with the health department.
