Mullaperiyar row: State-wide hartal begins

Wednesday, January 18, 2012: The state-wide hartal called by Mullaperiyar Samrakshna Samiti, a forum supporting Kerala’s stand on Mullaperiyar dam row, has begun here today.
Various political parties, their feeder organisations and several social outfits in Idukki district have extended their support to the protest.
Kerala Congress (M), the third largest component in Congress-led ruling UDF, has also pledged its “moral support” to the hartal. Kerala has been seeking construction of a new dam in place of the 116-year old reservoir, a demand strongly opposed by Tamil Nadu.
