THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state has bid a final farewell to the noted poet ONV Kurup, who died on Saturday. The mortal remains was consigned to flames with full state honours at Shanthikavadam, Thycaud at 11 am Monday morning. His son Rajeevan lit the funeral pyre arranged at the crematorium.
The body was brought to the crematorium from his residence in a procession along with his fans and family members. A music concert attended by 84 musicians was held at the crematorium. The songs rendered were blended from the poet’s poems and film songs. The concert was led by Dr Omanakutty. Following that, a police salute and a guard of honour were given.
Many from different walks of life paid homage to the poet at his residence Indeevaram in Vazhuthacaud. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Ministers, K C Joseph, V S Sivakumar, P J Joseph, K P Mohanan, K Babu, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran, party assistant secretary Prakash Babu, K E Ismail, singer K J Yesudas and many others paid their last respects.
Ministers Ramesh Chennithala, Shibu Baby John, chief secretary Jiji Thomson, collector Biju Prabhakar, Speaker N Shakthan, KPCC chief V M Sudheeran, Mayor V K Prashanth and many others attended the funeral at the crematorium.
