Rubber import ends in walkout

The opposition LDF today walked out of the state assembly protesting against the luke worm response of the government regarding the union government decision to allow rubber import. K Suresh Kurup of CPI (M) alleged the union government of adopting a stand favourable to the tyre lobby. Moving an adjournment motion he demanded the house should suspend all activities and discuss the issue..

Replying to the motion Oommen Chandy, CM stated the state government too is against any decision that would result in dropping price. He tried to soft pedal the anxieties raising out of the central decision pointing only a change of five rupees has been effected in import tax due to the new decision. “ The government would convey the anxiety of the state and the house in this regard. I also assure my government would take appropriate steps, if the union government decision adversely effects the farmers”.
Intervening in the discussion VS Achuthanandan, opposition leader urged the house should pass a resolution flaying the decision and forward this to the union government. “ I am not alleging that the CM is supporting the tyre lobby. But the response of the government is not good. “ - said VS. The CM however reiterated the anxiety would be properly conveyed and the government won't refuse to act, if the situation demands.
Speaker G Karthikeyan denied permission for the motion based on the reply, resulting in the walk out by the opposition.
