SAI suicide: No case against seniors, says crime branch

ALAPPUZHA: The crime branch said a case cannot be registered against the senior students in connection with the suicide of a junior at SAI centre in Alappuzha. Initial investigating report of the crime branch said there is no proof for ragging. A plus two student of Aryad Govt Higher Secondary School identified as Aparna and her three friends tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous fruit in May. Aparna died later.

The crime branch’s report said the statements of the suicide bid survivors before the police and the magistrate are contradictory. They told the magistrate that they consumed beer but hid it before the police. Senior students questioned them for having beer. A case cannot be registered as it cannot be considered as abetment of suicide.

Meantime, Aparna’s mother Geetha told police that her daughter took the extreme step because of ragging. They also sought a CBI probe on the incident. The case is being investigated by Alappuzha crime detachment DySP Parthasarathy Pillai under the supervision of Ernakulam range IG K Padma Kumar.
