I cannot stay mum if asked to close AG’s office, says Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has come forward again attacking the high court judge who criticized the advocate general. I am not a chief minister who will stay mum if asked to close the office of the AG. The office of the advocate general is for government advocates and so it is my duty to protect them, he told the assembly.

The chief minister turned against the judge while replying to the point of order raised by deputy opposition leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan stating the act of the former criticizing the judge is violation of assembly rules.

Chandy said, “The government respects and approves judiciary. I haven’t said the judge should not forget the way he came. I just said he should not forget the glory of the post he holds. The judge made the statement on the things not related to the case. The office of the AG is a constitutional body and how can one ask to close it. The act of criticizing the attorney general who appeared for the bar owners in the bar case is right. It will continue tomorrow also. Top most legal advisor of the centre appearing for bar owners questioning government’s liquor policy is not right.
