Kasturirangan: Six-member panel to be appointed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that they would conduct an examination on the ecologically fragile land before giving the final report to the centre on the Kasturirangan report regarding the protection of Western Ghats.

A decision has been taken at the meet convened in the capital city to appoint a six-member panel to examine 119 villages coming under the Western Ghats. Talking to the media after the meeting, Chandy said a panel led by the panchayat president will be appointed.

If there are any agricultural land in forest areas, then it would be given a special division with a survey number. The report will be made after the panel visits the places on July 23 and 24. The chief minister said there is no change in government’s stand in connection with the Kasturirangan report.

The chief minister said Elamala Mountain Hills is not forest land but revenue land and they have the status of plantations. The map given by the forest department will not be accepted. The functioning of the forest department on their own will not be permitted, he said.
