Youth taken into custody dies following head injuries

KOTTAYAM: A 40-year-old youth, who was taken into custody ten days ago, died Saturday following severe head injuries, hospital sources said.

He was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital here by police, they said.

Relatives of Siby, who was taken into custody on June 29 in Marangattupally in Pala, alleged that he was subjected to brutal custodial torture due to which he suffered severe head injuries.

Police, however, have refuted the charges.

Siby was allegedly taken into police custody in a case relating to a fight with a neighbour.

Father of three children, Siby, who belongs to SC community, was brought to the hospital on June 30 by police with severe head injuries.

Doctors said an emergency surgery was performed on the victim seeing the seriousness of his condition.

Later he was put on ventilator support.

Chairman of the Kerala Police Complaint Authority, Justice K Narayana Kurup, had visited Siby when he was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Parents of Siby alleged that the day he was taken into custody, police forced him to lie down in the rain on the verandah of the police station in Marangattupilly, Pala.

District Police authorities said Marangattupilly police Sub Inspector George Kutty, who took him into custody, has been suspended for not taking Siby to hospital for medical checkup immediately after he was taken into custody.
