Tuesday, September 6, 2011: M O H Farooq, now Governor of Jharkhand,
will assume charge as the new Governor of Kerala at a function held at
Raj Bhavan here on Thursday. Farooq will be replacing RS Gavai on the
expiry of his term.
Gavai, 82, is a veteran from Darapur village at Amravati in
Maharashtra and has an agricultural background. He graduated from Nagpur
University.
He has had a Republican Party of India background and has been noted
for expounding the Dalit cause consistently. He is the author of several
books. A keen enthusiast of sporting events such as wrestling, swimming
and athletics, he was associated with the Western India Football
Association, Mumbai.
He was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1964 to
1994, its Deputy Chairman from 1968 to 1978, and Chairman from 1978 to
1984. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council from
1986 to 1988. He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998. He assumed
office as Governor of Bihar in June 2006.
He has received the National Integration awards for peace and harmony
and the Kusta Mitra Award. Mr. Gavai has travelled widely and is a
known social activist.
Meanwhile M. O. Hasan Farooq Maricar (born 6 September 1937, Karikal)
is a three time Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puduchery,
then Pondicherry. He served from April 9, 1967 to March 6, 1968 and
March 17, 1969 to January 3, 1974 and from 1985 to 1990.
He was thrice elected to the Lok Sabha from Pondicherry in 1991, 1996
and 1999 and served as a Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and
Tourism during June 1991- December 1992.
He participated in the struggle for liberation of Pondicherry as a
student, during 1953-54 when Pondicherry was a French colony and served
as a Member of the Central Haj Committee in Mumbai from 1975 to 2000 He
was appointed as the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in September
2004.
