PATHANAMTHITTA: Six ruling MLAs came to the fore opposing the proposed airport project in Aranmula. V D Satheesan, T N Prathapan, Shreyams Kumar, Palode Ravi, Ahamed Kabeer and C P Mohammed are the MLAs opposing the project.
These MLAs along with opposition members have signed the memorandum sent to the Prime Minister seeking the cancellation of the project. The assembly legislators, social and cultural leaders and environmentalists have asked to shelve the project completely and protect food and water of the people.
The Aranmula Protection Council alleged that the 232 acres of land sanctioned by the land board for the landless are being given to the private airport company after flouting the land rules.
The KGS group is in charge of the project’s construction estimated for Rs 2000 crores. The airport is planned to be built on about 700 acres of land and will cater to wide body aircraft like Airbus A-300 and Boeing 747. It is being constructed aiming the pravasis of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts. The company says that once the project is completed almost many will be employed here.
