Aranmula industrial area notification cancelled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:   The Oommen Chandy Government  as cancelled a notification issued by the previous government declaring 2,000 acres of land in Aranmula as an industrial area as part of setting up of a private airport.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the State Assembly that the Industry Minister had already signed the order in this regard. The notification was issued by the previous Achuthanandan Government in violation of the rules and procedures, he said.

However, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan clarified that there was no need for an airport at Aranmula in Pathanamthitta. Later, the Speaker refused to allow the adjournment motion moved by the opposition over the cabinet decision to treat paddy fields that were reclaimed prior to 2005 as dry land. Amid noisy scenes, the Speaker rushed through the day's remaining proceedings and adjourned the house for the day.
