Cong revamp facing hurdles

The Congress that has been talking of a revamp for almost a year is still groping in the dark with a majority of leaders having divergent opinions about the reconstitution and also about the sub- committee which was set up as part of it.

A large number of leaders, who claim to distance themselves from factional feuds, are opposed to the sub-committee comprising  Benny Behanan, M M Hassan, K C Venugopal and K Sudhakaran. A bunch of  leaders say that the panel has been constituted mainly on factional lines, which they think would not serve the purpose of bringing about a consensus. There are also criticisms that the members in the panel are only interested in accommodating their own men in the various committees.

A KPCC general secretary belonging to the I-group said that the panel cannot decide on the members to be included in the various committees. ‘’If such a thing happens, it would be biased which cannot be accepted,’’ he said.

While a section of the leaders wants a complete revamp of the organisation at all levels, others want to maintain the status quo, reinstating the top leaders in their respective positions.

Former KPCC president K Muraleedharan opined that the panel members had not contacted leaders of the various factions. ‘’Once the reorganisation comes up based on the panel recommendations, it will only create more differences among partymen,’’ he said, adding that revamp should take place above factional interests.

Behanan said that the sub-committee had met many times and a final decision would be taken at the earliest.

‘’We will again meet this week. We have almost finalised the discussions,’’ he said. Most of the senior leaders are least bothered about the sub-committee and some of them said that they have no information with regard to it. Senior leader V M Sudheeran said he was not aware of the sub-committee.Though discussions have started in various quarters on factional lines, every leader has consolidated his position and knows how to deal with various organisational posts, a prominent A-group leader said. Both the A and the broad I-group have started to consolidate in various districts.

Even in the broad I-group, the factions led by UDF convener P P Thankachan, third group of Chennithala and fourth group of Vayalar Ravi have held meetings at various levels.

Almost all the factions have decided on their representatives, which is going to be a major headache when the actual revamp takes places.
