Corporation to go ahead with boat service plan

The Kochi Corporation will go ahead with its proposal to launch a boat service through Thevara-Perandoor Canal. The

civic body will seek the support of the state government in this regard, Mayor Tony Chammany said here on Wednesday.

He was speaking after visiting the Thevara-Perandoor Canal to analyse the cleaning works completed by the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

A team led by the Mayor also travelled through the one kilometre stretch of the canal in a canoe, from Aryappadam junction.

“We will request the government to support us in the proposal. We are also planning to set up new boat jetties on both sides of the canals and renovate the existing one,” the Mayor added.

Hibi Eden MLA, opposition leader of the corporation K J Jacob and councillors C A Shakkeer and K V Manoj were the other members of the team.

The Corporation last year had mooted a project for the renovation of five major canals in the city, including Thevara-Perandoor, Karanakkodam, Tripunithura-Edappally, Changadampokku and Pashnithodu-Pallichal canals.

The scope of the project also includes initiating boat services through the renovated canals.
