Houses damaged in mild tremor in Kundara


Four days after a mild tremor created panic in Kundara and adjoining areas, another mild tremor was felt in the region at around 10.29 am on Sunday.


Hundreds of houses in Kundara, Ezhukone, Nedumankavu and Munroethuruthu developed cracks in the tremor which lasted for about two seconds, according to unofficial reports.


In many areas, panic-stricken people ran out of houses. The impact of the tremor was felt in area within at least 30 km radius, including Kundara, Anchalummoodu, Sasthamkotta, Ezhukone, Kottiyam, Paravoor, Kannanalloor, Keralapuram and Munroethuruthu.


Three persons reportedly suffered minor injuries under the impact of the tremor. T K Shaji of Thadathuvila Veedu, Mulavana, who was on top of a ladder, fell down following the tremor and suffered minor injuries. Manikantan of Manikantavilasam, Chathanamkulam and Muhammada Ramsan of Asian Nagar were injured, after falling down from the bed.



According to sources in Indian Meteorological Department Thriuvananthapuram centre, the initial data available showed that the intensity of the quake was around 2.5 to 2.9 on the Richter scale and the focal depth was about 6 km.


On Wednesday, a tremor of 2.7 intensity was felt in Kundara area but had not caused much damage to houses and buildings.


Mild tremors were also reported in the area on June 11 and 12. Several mild tremors had occurred since April this year in the district, especially in the eastern parts like Pathanapuram and Thenmala.  District Collector P G Thomas said that State Disaster Management Authority had been appointed to conduct a study in the wake of repeated tremors in the area. The Revenue Department has begun an assessment on the extent of damage caused and adequate compensation will be provided to those who suffered loss.
