Mridangam player Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair dies


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted mridangam player Prof. Mavelikkara K Velukkutty Nair died here of old age ailments at a private hospital in the capitak city. He was 86.


He had undergone preliminary lessons in mridangam from his father mridanga vidwan Muthukulam S. Kumara Pillai. Later took advanced training from Maestro Padmabhooshan Palghat Mani Iyer under Gurukula system for a period of 8 years.
He joined the government service as a teacher in mridangam at Swathi Thirunal College of Music in 1959. He retired as Professor and Head, Department of Mridangam from the same college in 1982. He had been visiting professor during 1984-85.


He was guru to a big list of disciples from all over the country, which includes Changanasseri B Harikumar, T V Vasan (Ghatom), Trivandrum V Surendran, Prof. Parassala B Ravi, R. Vydianathan, Erickavu N Sunil, Kadakkavoor Rajeshnath, Vaikom Venugopal, Alleppey Chandrasekharan Nair, etc.


He is a recipient of various awards.
