Govt announces solatium for Perumbavoor victim’s kin

Wednesday, October 12, 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakhs to the family of Reghu, a 37 year-old-man who was brutally beaten to death by three persons in Perumbavoor.
Speaking to the reporters here on Wednesday, CM added that the victim’s wife will be given a government job. CM had earlier termed the incident as ‘unfortunate and brutal’.

Replying to a notice for an adjournment motion on the issue, CM informed that government would take stringent action against the culprits. He said Congress MP K Sudhakaran’s gunman Satheesan and another man have been arrested and remanded to custody in connection with murder of Raghu, an employee of a private firm at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district.
“Satheesan has also been suspended from service and search is on for a third person involved in it, “he said. Chandy said a preliminary probe had established Raghu was not a pickpocket and Rs 10000 found on him was the amount he got after mortgaging a gold ring in a co-operative bank in Palakkad. “Government will pay compensation to Raghu’s family, “CM announced.
Raghu, a passenger in a KSRTC bus travelling to Perumbavoor was beaten to death on the night of October 10 by three co-passengers, who suspected him to be a pickpocket. Opposition alleged it was government’s attitude that gave police courage to beat up persons in public and demanded action to remove those with criminal background from the force.
Speaker G Karthikeyan refused leave for the motion after the Chief Minister’s reply. Seeking leave for the motion Saju Paul (CPI-M) lambasted Congress MP K Sudhakaran’s statement that his gunman was not guilty. He also sought due compensation to the family of Raghu.
Before the walkout, Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said the third person involved had not been held even three days after the incident. ‘People feel there will be an attempt to scuttle the case as one of accused is a police personnel and attached to a Congress MP ,”he said.
