Singer K J Yesudas will never become the ‘Ganagandharvan,’ at least
officially, but he is to get a lifetime achievement award instead.
Music lovers have for long honoured Yesudas as the ‘Ganagandharvan,’
but giving the honorific title an official sanction would be a next to
impossible job, according to Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph.
Joseph said this in the Assembly in response to a suggestion by Hibi
Eden that the government should make official the title ‘Ganagandharvan’
to honour the singer on the 50th anniversary of his recording career in
November.
“November marks the 50th anniversary of the recording of ‘Jaathi
Bhedam Matha Dwesham,’ the first song by Yesudas for the film
‘Kaalpadukal’. “It was Mahakavi G Sankara Kurup who first called him
‘Ganagandharvan’,’’ Hibi said.
The Cultural Affairs Minister said that the Constitution prohibits
the conferring of such titles on individuals.Article 18 of the
Constitution deals with Abolition of titles and it says “No title, not
being a military or academic distinction, shall be conferred by the
state.”
Although in this regard the State Government has limitations, it
planned to confer a lifetime achievement award on the singer, Joseph
said.
