K R Naryanan’s family to join BJP

CHERUTHONI: Family members of former president K R Naryanan has decided to join the BJP. This is in protest against the “neglect the ruling government has been showing in protecting the late president’s memorial”. In the meeting to be held in Uzhavoor town on Thursday, as many as 30 members from eight families will be given the BJP membership. All are Kochery family members.  

K R Narayanan’s memorial is located in the premises of the house of his uncle Ayyappan Master’s daughter Seethalakshmi at Peruvanthanam. His ashes are also preserved here.  

BJP State vice-president P N Velayudhan will officially give the membership to the family members at around 5 pm at a function to be held at Uzhavoor town. The function will be chaired by Ettumanoor Radhakrishnan.

K R Narayanan passed away on November 9, 2005. 

The government had officially dedicated the memorial with full honours to the nation at a function attended by political leaders including chief minister Oommen Chandy, minister K M Mani. CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan had also visited the memorial.
Though the family members has been seeking the protection of the memorial, no help has reached till date. They said that BJP government in the Centre had given them assurance to protect and preserve the memorial and hence they were leaving the CPM and going to join the BJP.
