THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC subcommittee has opined that the government’s amendment to the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act-2008 will not stand, legally.
The committee said it would be impossible to regularise all paddy lands that had been filled. A new amendment is necessary and this is possible only after discussions. The five-member committee chaired by V D Satheesan will soon submit a report to KPCC in this regard.
Earlier interpretation is different from that in the amendment.
According to the amended rules, paddy land filling done before 2008 will have the legal validity. This would lead to extensive filling of paddy lands. Much earlier, KPCC president VM Sudheeran had asked persons concerned including Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash to avoid amending the act in a hurry.
