THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet which met on Tuesday decided to hold National school athletic meet in Kozhikode from January 29 to February 2. The decision has put a lid on uncertainty over venues for the event. As several other states had rejected permission to conduct the event, Kerala had to come forward to host the event. The State didn’t want the students to lose the opportunity to showcase their talent, as well.
When the government was first reluctant to host the event, athletic stars P T Usha and Sports Council President Anju Boby George intervened, resulting in the government to change its stand. The first cabinet decision was not to host the event in the wake of youth festival, SSLC exam, and Assembly election.
The controversy generated by Maharashtra government’s decision to hold separate events for girls and boys, however, led the government to quickly revisit its earlier decision. Kerala took the above final decision as Goa too was not willing to provide venue.
