CM not to attend R Shankar’s statue unveiling ceremony

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will not take part in former chief minister R Shankar’s statue unveiling ceremony. In a press release he informed that he was withdrawing from the programme as the organisers had asked him not to attend the function. Earlier the chief minister was asked to chair the function though.

The chief minister said any how he would be there at the Kochi airport to receive Modi.

“It is so sad that I would not be able to take part in the function. I was obliged to attend the PM’s function in two ways. R Shankar was a former chief minister and KPCC president. As per the protocol and basic courtesy, I am supposed to take part in a function in the State to be attended by the prime minister,” the chief minister said.

Chandy said he had to take such a decision as the organisers, who had invited him, themselves had changed their earlier stand. “I shall inform the prime minister the circumstances that would prevent me from attending the function. The prime minister would be unveiling the statue. However, I shall be there in Kochi to receive the prime minister. And, when he starts from Thiruvananthapuram, all ministers concerned will apprise the prime minister of Kerala’s issues,” he said in the statement.
