Sunday, 29 May 2011: It has become somewhat clear that G Karthikeyan would become the Kerala assembly speaker as the Congress leadership has come out with only one name. Though he has accepted the proposal, he is unhappy over opinions raised from various corners demanding the speaker’s post. Many names were proposed but all of them rejected to take up the post. The first meeting of the assembly would be held on June 1. On that day oath-taking of its members would be held. The members would take oath before the pro-time speaker N Sakthan.
Meanwhile the UDF will hold a meeting tomorrow for discussing on the Speaker, deputy speaker and Parliamentary affairs post. Sakthan had to take oath before the Governor before administering the oath to the members.
After the swearing-in of members, pro-time speaker would conduct an election for the speaker’s post and a special nomination would be fielded for the election.
It is the speaker who has to elect the deputy speaker. Nominations have to be filed for that too and would take time. So deputy speaker would be elected in the next session.
