May 21, 2011: Kanakaraj, the second accused in the sensational Puthur Sheela murder case in Palakkad was awarded death penalty by the Palakkad Additional District and Sessions Court today.
The Court had on Friday acquitted Manikandan, the third accused in the murder case. Manikandan has been let off for lack of evidence. According to the police version Manikandan had not entered the house of Sheela, when the incident occurred.
Kanakaraj has been found guilty of various charges including murder, robbery and attempt of murder. Legal sources hinted a life term is likely for the second accused.
Sheela, a native of Puthur was killed by slitting her throat, on March 23, 2010, at her house at Puthur around 1 p.m. Her mother Karthiyayini was also attacked by the three member gang who ran away with jewellery, mobile and other valuable goods in the house.
There were three accused in the case including Sampath, the first accused who later died in police custody.

According to the prosecution, the three member gang killed Sheela, as part of robbery attempt. The custodial death of Sampath is currently being investigated by the CBI. Many members of the investigation team that probed Sheela murder case including DySP CK Ramachandran are in remand now.
