Tuesday 24 May 2011: Delhi Metro rail project chairman E Sreedharan said that implementing the Kochi metro project with private participation is not practical. He said the project must be implemented in public sector during a discussion held with union minister K V Thomas.
Sreedharan said like Delhi metro, Kochi metro should be implemented with centre-state participation. He said political pressure must be used to cover the guidelines of the planning commission, which recommended public-private participation. He feels private companies would be unwilling to come forward.
He said the previous government was prepared to implement the project under public sector. The construction can be started within two months after inviting tenders. But if private participation is invited, that would take at least 18 months even to call for a tender, he informed Thomas.
After the discussion, KV Thomas said that all would be done for speedy implementation of Kochi metro. He said he will also inform chief minister Oommen Chandy about the outcome of the discussion
