Tuesday, May 31, 2011: When Malayalam is made the first language in schools in Kerala it would be done so simultaneously for all streams of study, Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb said.
He was speaking to mediapersons after an interaction with officials of the Education Department at the Government Guest House, Thycaud. Rabb did not categorically say that Malayalam would not be made the first language from the academic year beginning June 2011, he pointed out there were a lot of issues associated with this move.
One such problem was getting sufficient number of class hours for teaching Malayalam. One suggestion that had come up was to take away periods from Information Communication Technology (ICT). Since learning is ICT-centric in the State’s schools it may not be possible to do this at once.
When the Right to Education Act (RTE Act) is implemented and the number of working days raised to six a week, more time can be found for teaching Malayalam, he said.
