Friday, May 27, 2011: State Excise minister, K Babu today opined that abkari policy would be presented soon after making necessary amendments in the law. The Minister said his department would annul 12 beverage outlets permitted by the previous LDF government. He was speaking in a press conference here on Friday.
He said production of illegal toddy would be curbed but at the same time toddy-tapping sector would be protected. He said awareness programmes would be organized in campuses against liquor.

Tightening the noose brings in more money. Good for the minister.
What he probably should do is to accept the benefits of social drinking through toddy shops and address the toddy shortage. Toddy can be replaced with beer of similar alcohol level that of toddy. Beer may be produced at district level breweries started in the cooperative sector and may be supplied through toddy shops.
