Soofiya Maudani's plea rejected

Thursday, May 19, 2011: The special NIA Court in Kochi today rejected the plea filed by Sufiya Maudani for concessions on bail.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier submitted the charge sheet in the Kalamassery bus torching at Kalamassery on September 9, 2005.

Thirteen persons have been included in the accused list. Thadiyantevida Nazir is the first accused and Soofiya Maudani is the tenth accused, have been booked on charges of treason, in the case.

The first three accused in this case of Sherif, Ummar Farooq and Abdul Rahim are now found to have not involved in the action. Abdul Rahim was later killed while trying to cross the Indo-Pak border at Kashmir.

The NIA has mentioned in the charge sheet that the conspiracy in the bus torching case had taken place in a church in Aluva. Soofiya Maudani and Parambai Majeed had given instructions for the burning a bus belonging to the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation at Kalamassery.

The Home Ministry had on December 7th granted permission for the NIA to prosecute Soofiya Maudani, who is the tenth accused in the bus torching case. The NIA report informed that Soofiya had operated the bus torching incident while PDP Chairman Abdul Nazar Maudani was under imprisonment in the Coimbatore.
