Capt Lakshmi Sehgal dies


KANPUR: Lakshmi Sehgal, a close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, died in Kanpur on Monday. The 98-year-old was the first captain of the women's wing of Azad Hind Fauj or Indian National Army.


Sehgal was the Left candidate in the 2002 presidential election and lost to APJ Abdul Kalam.  


Sehgal, a doctor, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1998.


Cardiologists at the Kanpur Medical Centre, where Sehgal was admitted after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, had confirmed on Friday that things were not looking good for.


Lakshmi Sehgal belongs to the Aanakkara Tharavadu in Palakkad and is the daughter of freedom fighter Ammu Swaminath. Former MP Subashini Ali is her daughter and noted danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai is her sister.

Great freedom fighter worked with a great leader. May her soul rest in peace. It's a pity leaders like her get little mention in today's politics. Jai Hind!!!
