Oppn brings in adjournment motion on kerosene subsidy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI (M)-led LDF Friday brought an adjournment motion in the state Assembly seeking permission to discuss Centre's decision to distribute subsidy for kerosene, given to fishermen, through banks. Seeking the leave of the House to move the adjournment motion in this regard, Opposition MLA Suresh Kurup alleged the Centre's decision was creating difficulties for the fishermen. Earlier, the Centre has decided to provide kerosene subsidy for fishing boats through banks in order to check black marketing.

In his reply, Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob said a direction to distribute subsidy through banks was already revoked by the government following practical difficulties. However, the Centre's decision was implemented in certain areas on experimental basis, he added.

The proposal would be implemented only in a manner that would not cause any difficulty to fishermen, he added. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy clarified that the scheme is to avoid black marketing and to ensure that kerosene is being given to the right people.

The scheme was to prevent the subsidy from falling into the wrong hands, he added. Following the reply, Speaker G Karthikeyan denied the admissibility of the motion.
