VS will have to face disciplinary action

NEW DELHI: Almost all endeavours to make a compromise within the Kerala unit of CPI (M) failed even as V.S. Achuthanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan stuck to their own stands and raised allegations against each other at the party’s Central Committee on Saturday.

The two top leaders exchanged verbal assaults to the extent that the party has been forced to take disciplinary action on Sunday. But one question remains unanswered: To whom would be the party action favorable? It is certain that if disciplinary action is not taken, the party would become butt of everyone’s jokes.

While Achuthanandan blamed the party for its ‘rightist deviation’ and demanded to take action against its state leadership, the leaders from the official faction including CPI (M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan unanimously said that party cannot go forward without ousting V.S. Achuthanandan. Vijayan blamed that Achuthanandan’s actions are pro-UDF and that he is trying to destroy CPI (M) by joining hands with the rightist media.

Vijayan said the reason behind problems inside the party in Kerala is that no action was taken against Achuthanandan who has been breaching party discipline. To this Achuthanandan retorted that if action had been taken against Pinarayi Vijayan and his followers who breached the party’s policy itself, the party in Kerala would not have fallen into crisis.

At the Central Committee which began on Saturday morning, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat submitted a detailed report on the issues inside the party in Kerala. In the report, Karat accused Achuthanandan of committing breach of party discipline and anticipated disciplinary action against him. He also pointed out that the party’s state leadership and Achuthanandan had failed in dealing with the issues in connection with the murder of RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.

Subsequently, A. Vijayaraghavan demanded that Achuthanandan should be removed from the party. Meanwhile, P.K. Gurudasan said that action should not be taken against Achuthanandan as it would worsen the condition of party in the state.

The meeting of Central Committee will continue on Sunday. Following this the politburo will be convened to take a decision.
