Worms found in chicken meat; abattoir shut

KOTTAYAM: A slaughterhouse at Kuravilangad near here was shut down following complaints of presence of live worms on the meat sold on Sunday. The Kozhikodan Chicken Centre, which functioned near the panchayat bus stand on the side of the M.C. road, was shut by officials of the Health Department. The decision was made after the discovery of several live worms on the chicken meat being sold.


Following the discovery, a large number of persons gathered in the area and demanded the closure of the shop. The police soon arrived on the scene and took control of the situation. Officials of the Health Department led by Health supervisor C.J. James and Health inspector V.R. Sreenivasan later arrived and downed the shutters of the slaughterhouse.
