KOCHI: Giving a new twist to the high-profile Abhaya case, the Kerala High Court on Thursday ordered further probe in the case. The court also specified that the investigation should be completed within three months.
The court took note of the destruction of evidence during the early stages of investigations and asked the probing team to inquire about that. The current team could continue with the investigations.
Former DYSP, Crime branch, K T Michael and his team had approached the CBI court in Thiruvananthapuram with a request for conducting further probe but the court rejected that. It was after that they moved the high court.
The CBI had opposed Micahel as he was made an accused in a case on the destruction of evidence in the case.
A petition filed in the high court sought an in-depth investigation to find out whether Abhaya was subjected to physical harassment. It also made a plea to take statements from inmates of Pius X convent and to look into the destruction of Abhaya’s head attire.
It was on March 27, 1992 that Abhaya’s body was dug out from a well at the convent. The CBI took over the case in 1993.
The CBI court had earlier dismissed a plea made by Jomon Puthan Purackal seeking resumption of the trial. He had expressed his own reservations over Michael taking up the case as the latter himself was an accused in a related case.
