Project on Onam wins support from Heritage Lottery Fund in UK

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Malayalee Association of the UK (MAUK) will get financial support from the UK-based Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an interesting project – Our Story – which tells the story of ‘Onam’

MAUK , based in the London Borough of Newham, is a leading East London organisation representing UK’s Malayalam speaking community. Our Story is an 18 month project which is due for completion in November 2014.

“This project focuses on the significance of Onam of the Malayali community through various mini projects. The first is a reminiscence project that will capture on film the memories of Malayali elders’ experience of the rituals and customs associated with Onam, both in Kerala and in England. This will be transformed into a DVD and an oral history booklet, which will be archived in local libraries and study centres, forming part of an educational resource on world heritages,” said Project director Salila Vipinachandran at a press conference here on Thursday.

According to her, the second will be a pilot project that links MAUK in a partnership with Hartley Primary School in Newham to develop learning resources about Onam which, it is anticipated, will subsequently become part of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 children. Another aspect of the ‘Our Story’ Project will enable the public to experience and enjoy the cultural significance of Onam through events consisting of illustrated talks, workshops, music and dance and demonstration of traditional sports and games played during Onam.

“The project will enable Onam to be recognised as part of the different heritages celebrated by various communities living in the UK, thus preserving it for the future generation of Malayalis in the UK, as well as for the wider community. MAUK will be actively promoting the learning resources, book and DVD on its website www.mauk.org by enabling the public to download them for free,” she added.
