NEW DELHI: Noted poet M N Paloor has bagged this year’s Kendra Sahithya Academy Award. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 100,000, a plaque and a citation.
Paloor Madhavan Namboothiri was born to a very conservative Namboothiri family on June 22 in 1932 at Parakkadavu in Ernakulam.
He learned Sanskrit under scholar K P Narayana Pisharody at an early age. He also learned Kathakali under Pattikkanthodi Ravunni Menon. He retired as a driver from the Indian Airlines and is now settled in Calicut.
Some of his important works are Pedithondan, Kalikalam, Theerthayathra, Sugama Sangeetham, Kavitha, Pachamanga, Bhangiyum Abhangiyum, Ardhanareeswaran, Kathayillathavante Katha etc.
He is a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection of poems titled Kalikalam in 1983. He is also the recipient of Asan Memorial Poetry Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his overall contribution.
