NEW DELHI: Kerala Friday filed a plea to the union ministry of environment and forests for constructing a new dam in Mullaperiyar. The plea has sought environmental clearance to construct the new dam. The permanent panel of the national board of wild life had recommended the centre to permit the state to conduct an environment study for the dam.
In December, the standing committee of the national board of wild life permitted the state to conduct a study. Tamil Nadu approached the centre demanding cancellation of the permission given. When it bore no result, they approached the Supreme Court. Kerala moving forward bypassing the Supreme Court verdict that the dam is safe, is contempt of court. The court order says that one should think about a new dam only if both the states reach a consensus.
