ALAPPUZHA: “Those sisters don’t like us...”, this was what the female athletes of Sports Authority of India centre in Kerala (SAI) who had attempted suicide were heard murmuring when they were being rushed to hospital in a boat.
This has given suspicion whether they had suffered ragging at the hands of their seniors. The four who attempted suicide were close friends.
There are also reports that the trainers harshly behaved with the girls. One of the suicide victims were allegedly beaten up by her trainer.
Yesterday itself, the district magistrate had reached the hospital and taken the girls’ statement.
Meanwhile, DySP John Joseph said the girls had gone for a marriage function and drank wine. When they came back to their hostel, other inmate poked fun at them and hostel authorities chided them. Out of shame and sadness, they tried to commit suicide.
Ward councillor K K Jaya has said that the above incident has thrown suspicion on the way the hostel is being managed and sought detailed inquiry into harassment, if any, in the hostel.
