NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has held that rabid and dangerous dogs can be killed while others should be vaccinated or put in protection centres. The court also refused to stay the high court order on killing of rabid/violent dogs.
The petition was filed by animal lover Anupam Tripadi, citing that innocent dogs were being killed in masses under cover of the high court order.
The court pointed out that the stray dog issue worsened as rules framed on the basis of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 were not promptly followed. In the rules, there are also no proper definition for street dogs.
The court asked the Animal Welfare board to file an affidavit after making it also a party in the case.
