KOCHI: Madrassas are educational institutions and not religious institutions, clarified the Kerala High Court. The court made the statement while considering a plea requesting not to permit madrassas as polling booths during election time. The court rejected the plea also.
The pleas were filed questioning fixing of two madrassas in Kasargod as polling booth for local body polls. The plea argued that madrassas are for religious studies and permitting it as polling both is against the beliefs.
However, the court rejected it. Madrassas are not only for religious studies but are also primary education centers. Educational institutions are used as polling booths during election time and so there is nothing wrong in using madrassas as polling stations.
