KOTTAYAM: Changanassery Archdiocese former head Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil has clarified that he still adheres to his statement he had given against T V Thomas decades ago.
The archbishop had said that Industries Minister TV Thomas secretly supported the Catholic Church in the strike held by private college managements in 1972 against Achutha Menon ministry. He said he had no memory loss and what he said was true. His revelation appeared in his auto biography published in the November edition of Changanassery Archdiocese publication ‘Kudumbajyothi’. The chapter has been titled “Sambavabahulamaya 1972(3)”.
TV Thomas, who was the minister then, went in his car to the Changanassery church and assured his support. Powathil says Thomas had not lost his faith in God then and he didn’t shy away from making confessions before priests.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has rejected Powathil’s statement. “Powathil has never said anything good about Communists,” he said in reply to a question at a press conference here on Tuesday.
