Revenue from liquor in state increases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite a series of restrictions on the sale of liquor in force, excise revenue has registered a growth of Rs 101.51 crore in the first seven months of the current financial year as compared to the same period last year, Excise Minister K Babu informed the state Assembly Monday.

The minister said the excise revenue income till October 31, 2015 during the current financial year was Rs 121.14 crore as against Rs 1019.63 crore during the same period in the financial year 2014-15.

Pointing out that he took several steps to increase excise revenue, the minister said stringent action was taken by enforcement agencies to prevent smuggling of illegal spirit into the state. As many as 13,626 people were arrested in connection with various Abkari cases during the period and seized 15,391 liters of spirit and 29,098 liters of illicit Indian Made Foreign Liquor.

In Kerala, bars are allowed only in five-star establishments. The retail sale of liquor was restricted only through government outlets.
