Cochin port in huge crisis

Mattancherry: Due to the delay in transferring container goods to other Indian ports, the Vallarpadom container transshipment terminal is facing huge crisis. This year the terminal was proposed to handle 7.75 lakh TEU containers, but with the passing of 6 months, only 1,36, 734 TEU containers were transferred. Even one third of the goal was not completed.

It was exacted that Cochin port would get Rs 109.91 crore from Vallarpadom this year and due to this Cochin port is passing though huge crisis. The Cochin port already gave a report on the same to central shipping ministry. The reason for present crisis is due to delay in moving the goods arriving in Vallarpadom to other Indian ports.

As per the rule, these goods are to be transferred in Indian ships. But the feeder ships required for the same are not sufficient in India. The whole available such ships in India have the capacity to carry only 12,000 TEU containers.

Though there are foreign ships available in plenty, these cannot be used in Vallarpadom. There are 600 containers remaining to be transferred to other ports and among them 350 are lying with the terminal for the last 20 days. Though terminal has all the facilities, it is failing to grow up to mark and the Dubai port International Company that runs the terminal is also apprehensive.
