Reign of Terror by Automen
Contrary to police claims, fleecing autorickshaw drivers continue to rule the city streets. In fact some go to the extent of brutal attacks to get their way through.
A video clipping with the police control room shows that last month when a North Indian family refused to pay the charge as demanded by the auto driver, they were brutally attacked using iron rods.
The police remained mute spectators to the game and the accused were taken into custody only after they themselves surrendered before the court.
According to a statement from the central police station, Prem Malhotra and his family who came to Kochi as tourists hired three autorickshaws from North Railway Station to KSRTC bus station on May 11. The auto boarded by Malhotra was driven by Surya, 24, a Tamil Nadu native residing at Kadavanthra.
After getting down at the bus station, Surya charged `80 when the metre only showed `60.
When Prem Malhotra rejected Surya’s demand, the driver called four of his friends Rajesh, Noushad, Salahudheen and Raghavan and hit the passengers using iron rods.
Malhotra suffered head injury, while his son Yathin Malhotra had fractures.
Later, Prem Malhotra's wife, Raji Varghese registered a complaint on the basis of which police started the investigation.
After the incident, Surya escaped to Coimbatore. The police claim to have traced out the location with the assistance of cyber cell.
Surya and his friends later surrendered before the Judicial First Class Magistrate. The Magistrate remanded the accused persons in police custody.
But even though police attempted to trace Surya and friends with the assistance of Cyber police, the police got the accused into custody only after they surrendered before the court.
The incident reveals that even after being equipped with high-definition cameras, the police are finding it difficult to arrest the culprits.
According to a statement from the Central Police station, more cameras are being installed at different parts of the city.
