Elderly woman killed

KOZHIKODE: An elderly woman, who was staying alone, was killed during an attempted robbery at Vattakkinar, near Government Arts and Science College, here early on Saturday. The police said 69-year old Sundari was attacked by an unidentified man with sharp weapons on her face and head. The seriously injured victim died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The attacker entered the house through the roof of the house after removing the clay tiles. He had used the bamboo poles found near the house to reach the top. Her house was one of the houses in the Chirakkal House Lane. The police said the woman was attacked when she resisted attempts to rob her savings and a gold chain. Her neighbours were alerted after hearing the screams from the locked house. They found her in a pool of blood and saw a thin man in faded yellow shirt dashing out and disappearing into the overgrown shrubs behind the college premises. Soon they rushed her to the hospital.

G. Sparjankumar, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode City, said the woman made a living by selling homemade snacks and idli to small hotels and migrants in the locality. Her married daughters resided with their family elsewhere in the city. She also ran a petty money-lending business among the workers. She had mentioned to her neighbours about an attempted robbery a few days ago, he said. The Panniyankara police have registered a case in connection with the incident. Investigators suspect some migrant worker could be behind the crime. Sniffer dogs of the city police were brought to the spot to track the culprit. Finger print experts also collected samples.
